This stretch of road at Taman Klang Utama is covered with rubbish even though there is a designated bin provided by the council.
THE lack of cleanliness in Klang seems to have gone from bad to worse over the recent years.

The public and residents associations alike have repeatedly voiced their dissatisfaction over the deteriorating condition of the royal town.

It was also reported that Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah remarked he was dissatisfied with the poor standard of cleanliness in Klang.

A check by StarMetro at various parts of the district including Port Klang, Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Bandar Puteri, Taman Sentosa, Taman Sri Andalas, Kapar and Meru revealed that the cleanliness level was far below expectations.

Residents say that uncollected garbage bags piling up on the roadside have become a common sight.

Checks revealed that many of the drains at residential areas were filled with rubbish, resulting in clogged drains that eventually cause flooding during downpours.

Residents were also unhappy over the dirty parks, children’s playgrounds and fields.

Checks also showed that backlanes of many of the townships, including Bandar Bukit Tinggi, were filthy as they were littered with unwanted items, such as disused furniture and plastic containers as well as rubbish.

Even walkways in the town such as Jalan Besar in South Klang and Jalan Gopeng in North Klang are strewn with rubbish.

Federation for Residents Association of Klang president Datuk Tan Hock Guan said the cleanliness of the town was not on par with the rapid development that Klang had undergone in the recent decade.

As the district sees more development, Tan said, cleanliness should also improve accordingly.

He said it was sad that Klang had deteriorated in terms of general cleanliness.

“It is very depressing to see rubbish almost everywhere including the streets, five-foot ways, parks and backlanes.

“At some areas, garbage has been left uncollected for months while in other areas, the drains are clogged up with rubbish,” he said, adding that his federation represented 18 resident associations.

In line with the rapid development and economic growth Klang had experienced so far, Tan said, the standard of cleanliness should be very much higher.

He said it was unacceptable to find the town in this poor state.

“The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has the financial resources to spend to improve the situation,” he said.

Tan also said that the lack of civic consciousness among the public is a contributing factor.

He said the federation was prepared to work hand in hand with the council to create awareness on the importance of cleanliness among its members.

Bandar Bukit Tinggi Residents Association chairman Gan Ee Chai said the contractors hired by the council to keep the town clean had failed to provide regular service.

He said the council should take action against the contractors who failed to carry out their tasks according to the job specification.

“The council should also take action against all those who litter and dump waste at public places,” he said.

Aman Perdana Residents Association chairman A. Maniam said the backlanes of the shophouses in his area were filled with of discarded materials.

He said the foreign workers who occupied the shoplots were contributing towards the problem.

“The contractor hired also failed to empty the garbage bins on a regular basis,” he said.

Bandar Puteri Rukun Tetangga chairman M. Mohan said the parks and streets in the area were dirty with rubbish.

He said there was a tendency for residents to dispose of their unwanted stuff indiscriminately.

“The lack of efficiency and enforcement from the authorities has resulted in this ugly situation,” he said.
