The historic Indian Muslim Mosque in Klang's Little India.

MENTION Klang and Kuala Langat to people who are not familiar with these areas, and the most common misconception would be that they are remote with little or no attractions.

On the contrary, both have much to offer visitors, especially families in search of new places to discover and restaurants to try out.

Taxi driver V. Rajah, who was born and raised in Klang, said most people did not know the hidden gems in Klang and its surrounding areas.

“You don’t have to leave town or the district to have a good time,” said Rajah, who goes on trips to new places with his family on Sunday.

Mandy Chee said middle and low-income families could have a great time without having to fork out much.

“Morib beach is a great place to spend the day and if you pack a picnic basket, you hardly have to spend anything,” said the mother of two.

She said going to Pulau Ketam was also very affordable as the KTM Komuter would take you almost to the Port Klang jetty.

The fare to the island was also inexpensive and the ferry trip an experience in itself, said Chee.

For a weekend trip, a good starting point would be Morib in Kuala Langat before ending your day at the many attractions in Klang. Here are some of the places on the Kuala Langat-Klang adventure route.

Morib

This popular beachfront offers a cosy little stretch for families to have a safe dip in the sea.

The rest of the beach is a long esplanade with countless stalls selling various items ranging from clothes and foodstuff to knick-knacks.

There is also a recreational park, ideal for family picnics because there are gazebos. The area is also cool and shady due to the many trees. The beach offers a picturesque scene during sunset. The Allied forces also landed here during World War II and a monument commemorates this historical event.

Carey Island is separated from the mainland by Sungai Langat. Almost the entire island is an oil palm estate owned by Sime Darby Plantations but it is also home to the famous Mah Meri Orang Asli tribe.

Besides this, Carey Island is a must for seafood lovers as there are several restaurants that offer freshly caught seafood.

Just before one reaches the bridge that connects the island with the mainland at Telok Panglima Garang, there is a small market by the side of the road where fishermen sell their catch directly instead of going through middlemen.

The Mah Meri village is also a must-visit as they are known for their craftsmanship in wood-carving and weaving.

The villagers also entertain visitors with their traditional dance and music.

Dong Zen Temple, Jenjarom

The Dong Zen Temple’s biggest attraction is its annual 15-day Chinese New Year celebrations, which showcase different themes every year.

The temple is very popular as its tenets replicate the Buddhism practised in Taiwan, which is said to be very scholarly in nature.

Set on a sprawling site, the temple complex is also lit up with bright, colourful lights at night.

Pulau Ketam

Pulau Ketam, a ferry ride away from Port Klang, is an island inhabited by fishermen.

Besides the great seafood, Pulau Ketam is also popular for its dried seafood and salted fish. The place is suitable for weekend getaways as there is a reasonably priced hotel located at the island’s jetty.

Almost the entire village is built on stilts. Visitors can rent bicycles and ride along the village’s wooden walkways. Pulau Ketam headman Cha Keng Lee said mud crabs are abundant here and they are harvested and sold by the restaurants here.

Sri Sunderaraja Perumal Temple

This temple is more than 100 years old and is located at Persiaran Raja Muda Musa, one of the major landmarks in Klang.

Known as the Thirupathi of South-East Asia, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is currently being rebuilt and once completed, would be the country’s first granite temple.

Kuan Yin Temple

The Kuan Yin Temple is more than 100 years old and is a popular place for Taoists during full moon. It was built in 1892 and is located in Jalan Barat Raya, featuring beautiful old Chinese architecture and decor.

These include a giant Kuan Yin statue in the middle of a koi pond as well as walls with ancient Chinese motifs.
