About 20,809 tonnes of solid waste were removed from Klang River in a one-year period from February last year.

A TOTAL of 20,809 MT (metric tonne) of solid waste was removed from the river in the one-year period from February 2016 to February this year during the Klang River clean-up project.

As a result, the natural habitat along the river has seen some recovery due to the improved water quality.

Selangor State Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Elizabeth Wong said this in reply to Dr Xavier Jayakumar Arulanandam (PKR-Seri Andalas), who asked about river clean-up plans.

According to Wong, the project carried out by Hebat Abadi Sdn Bhd started with the installion of 48 units of mini-log boom (a barrier placed in a river) along the sluices to prevent floating solid waste from getting into Klang River.

“The next step was to remove the waste collected at the log boom and disposing of it at suitable disposal sites. To date, 1,100kg of recyclables collected from the river have been separated from non-recyclables to reduce the volume of solid waste sent to disposal sites.

“In 2017, main log booms will be installed to prevent the flow of rubbish from the Klang River headwaters, especially from Kuala Lumpur, from flowing to the outfall,” she said.

Wong added that drone and sensors would be used to monitor river conditions and illegal dumping activities at the river.

“The state through the Selangor Local Government, New Village Development and Legalising of Factories Committee has ordered all local councils to monitor and take action against factories and premises that cause river pollution.

“All local councils are in the process of preparing a complete inventory of premises in or near the river reserves that may contribute to river pollution,” she said.
