The traffic situation has parents of children from schools along Jalan Raya Barat concerned about their safety. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star

EVERY morning, drivers along Jalan Raya Barat in south Klang trigger a near standstill that causes traffic to back up some 600m, as they squeeze into the right-hand queue to turn into Lorong Perbandaran.

At times tempers flare. Motorists on the right-hand queue are often seen punching their fists in the air, as drivers on the left side, totally disregarding traffic rules, push into their queue just after the Jalan Raya Barat-Jalan Melawis intersection.

Drivers heading from Jalan Melawis to Lorong Perbandaran further aggravate the problem as they merge with traffic on Jalan Raya Barat and press on to the right.

With motorists squeezing into the slightest space available to be the first to move ahead, traffic often comes to a near standstill.

Consequently, motorists coming from the opposite direction also find it difficult to drive through.

As a result of the double turn-off, motorists who want to go straight down past SMK (P) Methodist, Klang in Jalan Raya Barat are caught in the standstill, while parents sending their children to SMK Methodists ACS, located on the same road, arrive late to school.

Many parents say the traffic situation at the Jalan Melawis-Jalan Raya Barat intersection from 6.45am to 7.45am daily has become a major problem.

“It’s difficult to drive through the Jalan Melawis-Jalan Raya Barat intersection. Traffic police personnel are never seen and rampant violation of traffic rules is becoming the norm.

“Matters become worse when speeding motorcyclists weave through the vehicles and ride on the opposite side of the road, sometimes causing minor collisions,” said one parent.

When StarMetro called up Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin to ask about the traffic situation, he said no complaints had been forwarded.

“I will discuss the matter with the officers in charge of traffic at the council’s infrastructure sub-committee meeting in a week’s time,” he said.

On a more immediate note, he said there was a possibility that MPK might put up concrete barriers at the turn-off to Lorong Perbandaran to ensure it remained a one-lane turn-off.

“Apart from that, we might consider allowing cars from Jalan Melawis wanting to go to Lorong Perbandaran to make a U-turn further down the road, after SMK (P) Methodist, Klang, to gain access to the hill road,” he said.

South Klang district Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Deputy Supt Mohd Dom Abdullah said a traffic policeman would be stationed at the Jalan Raya Barat-Lorong Perbandaran turn-off to control the movement of vehicles during the morning rush hour.
