(Clock-wise from left) The famous ‘pai kuat’, Claypot Asam Mustard and Hakka Meatballs.

PENG Heong Hakka Pai Kut is one of the food gems in Klang that I still visit for the occasional hearty meal, despite having moved away from the town years ago.

As its name suggests, the restaurant’s speciality is its pork ribs (pai kuat).

Listed as the Famous “Pai Kut” Spare Ribs King in the menu, the tender and flavourful dish is served with sweet sauce, though the slightly sticky meat can still be enjoyed on its own.

As a bonus, the pork ribs are also served boneless.

Two other personal favourites are the Hakka Meatballs and Claypot Asam Mustard (chai boey).

Peng Heong Hakka Pai Kut continues to attract diners from near and far, who patronised the restaurant for its delicious food and affordable prices.

The Hakka Meatballs are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Claypot Asam Mustard is a sour and spicy dish of mustard greens typically boiled with leftover meat, vegetables, dried chillies and tamarind slices.

This comforting soup hit all the right notes and is best enjoyed with rice.

The other popular dishes offered by the restaurant are the Pork Belly Soup, Hakka Claypot Vinegar Pork Trotter, Claypot Curry Spare Rib, Claypot Curry Mutton, Huxu Chicken, Claypot Satay Curry Chicken, Hakka Claypot Char Yok and Seafood Tofu. There are also a selection of vegetables and side dishes to go with your meal.

Peng Heong Hakka Pai Kut is practically an institution in its own, as the restaurant has been operating in Klang for decades and continues to attract diners from near and far.

Yong holding a pot filled with the restaurant's famous pai kuat.

It was previously located in a grubby roadside stall with cramped dining space, before moving to its current corner shoplot where there is ample parking space.

The family business is headed by William Yong Yok Pin, who inherited the recipes of some of the restaurant’s dishes from his grandfather. Yong has since refined the recipes and added some new dishes of his own to the menu.

The cheerful proprietor can usually be seen busily chopping the pork ribs into bite-sized pieces or attending to customers’ orders.

Besides the appetising food, another factor that attracts diners to Peng Heong is its reasonable pricing.

My bill for a lunch for two came up to RM44.50, which included three main courses, rice and drinks.

While the restaurant was packed during a weekend visit, my colleague and I found service to be prompt and we did not have to wait long to get a table.

The restaurant also caters to orders for festive prayers and events such as Qing Ming (Chinese All Souls’ Day) and Dongzhi (Winter Solstice).

Peng Heong Hakka Pai Kut is located at 2, Lorong Gudang Nanas 1, Off Jalan Pasar, Klang.

It is open for business from 7am to 4.30pm daily.
